about

Whilst Phase 3 plans were given full approval at the proposal stage, there was a range of preliminary works to be carried out before construction commenced, and the Network arranged for a number of site surveys to be carried out to determine specific details regarding the location of any extensions to the current network map, utilising new lines or existing decommissioned routes.

Harthill Moor was an area that had previously seen the development of the line from the very first Phase of the Network, linking Nine Ladies Junction with Barbrook South Junction, specifically serving Doll Tor and Gardoms Yard, which stands north-east of the site. For Phase 3, third rail electric technology was to be employed which meant the construction of a second pair of tracks parallel to those already in existence as well as an array of infrastructure including substations, underground maintenance workshops and a new platform and visitor centre at Nine Stones Close.

It had already been agreed that special care had to be taken in this area, owing to the number of prehistoric features and historical information gathered from the first Phase of development, and work on the survey and consequent excavations began in March 1984.
